Offend Not in Word

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).

My mouth has gotten me in trouble more than I care to admit. I’ve had a life of speaking when I shouldn’t have. Saying things I regret saying—spouting off judgmental and harsh words without thinking.

The next time there’s a windy day outside take a feather pillow, cut it open, and shake it vehemently in the air. Then attempt to retrieve every single feather and put it back in the pillow. Impossible! That’s how it is with our cutting words.

To me, the saddest part is that it often involves the people we love and care for the most. A spouse. A child. A friend. Thank God for His helping grace to forgive each other and move on. “I am sorry” are three of the most powerful words we can utter. Most people are sympathetic and forgiving; ready for reconciliation. Let our words be kind, gentle, wise, and uplifting. Let us be full of grace and understanding. Let us purpose to keep peace. And let our words be directed by Christ Jesus.
