Living the Christian Life

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” (Romans 12:1-3).

It was a merciful act when God provided a way for us to receive the forgiveness of our sins and obtain eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ. I hope you’ve entered into the mercies of God by faith in Christ. And what is our reasonable and rational service as believers? Our reasonable service as believers and followers of Christ is to present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy or set apart, and acceptable unto God according to Holy Scripture.

We are not invoked to live this Christ-like lifestyle in order to find acceptance with God and earn His kindness and His mercy. We do not sacrifice in order to earn His favor and continued mercies. Those things are already ours through Christ Jesus. What a gift! But this undeserved mercy and kindness of God should constrain each of us to present ourselves fully to our Lord. It changes our inner man and equips us with the ability to walk with Christ.

We are invoked to fill our mind with the word of God. This is where complete transformation will come. Go to the word, believer, and let it cleanse and fill your mind with holy and acceptable instruction. Be transformed by renewing (renovating) your mind through the word of God. Then we can prove the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.

Finally, avoid thinking of yourself more highly than you ought. This, I believe, is the primary attitude of the world. We are each tempted to do it. Faith is the victory. Faith is denial of self and dependence on the Savior. God imparts a measurement of faith to each of us who are now in Christ. Our personal faith has increased though the years. Through the word, by experiences, and through trials God has increased our faith in Him. And now we should live by this measure of faith in God through Christ. Keep trusting God to develop the character of Christ in you. Set your mind on Christ. Long to know Him more. Purpose to love Him. Your life will change!
