The Outward Appearance

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart

” (1 Samuel 16:7).

The Lord looks on the heart. He knows our thoughts and our motives. He also knows our judgmental attitude toward others even though we may not verbalize it. You may dress up and polish the outer man to impress others. You might be on a mission to enforce your rules and standards that are not supported by Holy Scripture. As the Pharisees did you might even appear to be righteous with your well trained countenance and your accepted religious dress code.

But you should know, in the process of attempting to be holy and righteous through outward appearance you’ve more than likely lost an opportunity to reach a unbelieving world for Christ. Instead of making others thirst and hunger for Christ, they flee from Him. They choke on your outer focus and gag on your powerless and Christ-less words. They don’t want it or Christ.

Let’s not be so anti-cultural that we push others away from Christ. Let’s avoid being weird in the guise of worship. Let’s give lots of Gospel truth in sincere love with plenty of kindness. Let’s give them the Jesus of the Bible—full of grace and truth. And Jesus will fashion their life the way He chooses. Let the Holy Spirit be the Holy Spirit.
