Unity or Uniformity?

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).

Biblical unity is not focused on externals. God delights in and allows differences. I’m glad. Avoid mistaking uniformity in music, dress, or appearance as unity. The Bible says no such thing.

We are admonished to “…keep the unity of the Spirit….” So what is the unity of the Spirit? Ponder what the Bible says.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26).

The Holy Spirit specifically brings to our remembrance the things CHRIST taught.

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (John 15:26).

The Holy Spirit specifically testifies of CHRIST.

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” (John 16:24).

The Holy Spirit will specifically glorify CHRIST.

And I’m sure you recall the promise of Acts 1:8. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

The Holy Spirit leads us to witness of CHRIST.

The Biblical teaching is obvious. Unity is CHRIST. He is our bond. He is our message. He is our hope. He is our focus. Unity is not uniformity. It is CHRIST. A true mark of maturity is when we allow others to be “different” but because they are in CHRIST we have unbreakable unity! Think about it.
