What About Sin?

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8)

We all commit random acts of sin. Does this mean we are of the devil? I know, some teachers will point out the “tense”. This is present tense, and means continual and habitually. To be honest here, since I believed in Jesus 35 years ago, I have continually and habitually committed random acts of sin.

I think what this verse means, Jesus destroyed the works of the devil. Sin no longer has authority over the believer. The penalty of sin, which is death, has forever been destroyed by Jesus. Do not sin, but if we do, we have an advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous!
